If the ultraviolet radiation has a wavelength of 100–230 nm, it may react with oxygen in the air to form ozone.
Ozone is highly oxidising (several times more so than chlorine), and therefore accelerates the ageing of rubber and plastics; furthermore, at high concentrations, it may have adverse effects on human health.
