A UV oven, also known as a UV curing oven, where “UV” stands for ultraviolet light, and ‘curing’ refers to the process by which a substance transforms from a low-molecular-weight state to a high-molecular-weight state.
UV curing generally refers to the curing conditions or requirements for coatings (paints), adhesives (glues) or other encapsulants and sealants that require curing by ultraviolet light; it is distinct from heat curing, curing with cross-linking agents (curing agents) and natural curing.
Features of UV LEDs: UV LED curing units/UV ovens utilise LED lighting technology. The top lighting area features LEDs of various power ratings and selectable wavelengths (365 nm, 385 nm, 395 nm and 405 nm) to cure different types of UV adhesives, UV inks, UV varnishes and UV paints.
The advent of UV LEDs has brought about a revolutionary change in the UV curing industry. They offer constant light intensity, excellent temperature control and are portable and environmentally friendly, whilst also featuring relatively low purchase costs and virtually zero maintenance costs,
This has helped to improve the quality of UV curing processes whilst promoting energy efficiency and reducing consumption. UV LED point, line and area light sources are now being utilised across various industries. We believe that, through the collective efforts of the entire industry,
The future of the UV curing industry is sure to open up a whole new world of environmental protection and energy efficiency.
Scope of Application and Relevant Sectors
UV curing ovens: The use of intense ultraviolet radiation to achieve instantaneous surface curing is a high-tech field that has developed rapidly in recent years; its unique radiation characteristics and excellent performance have attracted considerable attention from both the scientific community and the business sector. For example, UV frosted inks used in the printing of cigarette packets, wine packaging and frosted signage offer rapid curing and a high-quality frosted finish.
Used for offset printing on various non-absorbent substrates, it dries instantly and offers strong adhesion. UV curing machines are essential for UV transparent inks, UV foaming inks, UV pearlescent inks and UV frosted inks, amongst others.
I. Widely used in numerous sectors, including electronics, fibre optics, liquid crystal displays, screen printing and packaging. For example: curing of UV inks for screen printing, offset printing of medium-format packaging cartons, nameplates and desk calendars; UV curing of various types of cards, wall calendars and nameplates; and drying and curing equipment for UV varnish on large sheets of cardstock;
II. UV adhesive or UV ink curing for small electronic, plastic and metal components; UV light-curing dispensing and curing for electronic and precision parts, magnetic heads, magnetic materials, optical lenses, liquid crystal displays, micro-motors, etc.; UV adhesive curing equipment for sealing the edges of liquid crystal display glass;
III. UV curing equipment for double-sided panels or double-sided printed surfaces (such as printed circuit boards);
IV. Modification of UV curing equipment for strip-fed printing (labelling presses or other types of production lines) to enable continuous UV curing, thereby doubling efficiency;
V. Specialised equipment for the drying and curing of UV varnish and UV adhesives on plastic buttons, metal nameplates and PE plastic casings; and for marking and curing on ceramic capacitor production lines and small electronic components;
VI. Portable UV curing experimental equipment; on-site trials; small-scale production; on-site repairs; benchtop curing trials; and small-batch UV curing experimental equipment
What are the main applications of UV LED curing ovens? Main applications of UV LED curing ovens
1. With regard to spraying:
UV LED curing ovens are commonly used by companies specialising in the spray coating of plastic items such as mobile phone cases, cosmetics packaging and MP3 players and other small electrical appliances; both the spray coating of mobile phone cases and UV printing require the use of UV LED curing ovens.
2. Printing:
Screen printing, offset printing and five-colour printing mostly involve items such as USB sticks and CDs, which are coated with a UV protective varnish. When printing on CDs, UV inks are also used for UV screen printing, which requires UV LED cold-light curing equipment.
3. The timber industry:
In the timber industry, UV LED curing equipment is used to cure coatings applied to timber surfaces, as UV coatings (such as varnishes) offer superior performance in various respects:
For example, resistance to abrasion, acid and alkali resistance, weather resistance and so on. UV coating can give surfaces such as wooden flooring a lustrous, elegant finish; in the timber industry, high-power UV LED curing ovens are predominantly used for coating applications.
4. PCB and LCD industries:
A PCB is a printed circuit board, and a UV LED curing oven is used to cure the adhesive applied to the circuit board.
5. Varnishing of handicrafts:
Any craft items that require UV varnish can be processed using a UV LED curing oven. UV automatic coating line: The pre-treatment process utilises an electrostatic dust removal gun,
Alternatively, an electrostatic dust removal bar is used for this process—commonly known as corona treatment—because plastics have very low surface tension; after corona treatment,
Increasing the surface tension of the surface serves to enhance the adhesion between the substrate and the UV coating, thereby achieving better curing results; however, if the pre-treatment is not carried out properly,
Adhesion issues with the product can also arise; in many cases, these are not caused by UV light, but rather by problems with the equipment or the operational process, and are also closely related to the UV coatings or inks used.
